Year's In The Making
Three year's ago Roy Keefer
participated in the first Bowhunting.net Bowhunt with Billy Don and hunted
for an Aoudad as well as a nice buck. He got the buck but the Aoudads wouldn't
co-operate. The next year he went Aoudad-less again. But today Roy's perseverance
and patience paid off.
Roy and Clint Carpenter
(on video) went to a stand on top of a rocky, wooded hill near a fence
line. They hung up two Trophy Leaf masking scent plastic leaves (from Wildlife
Research Center) inside the blind by the two shooting windows they
made in the Matrix. The Scent Leaves were to cover their scent ... and
they did ... real good.
First they saw an 8-point
buck and it kept looking off at something behind the blind. Roy carefully
cracked a narrow slit in the closed up side window of the blind. Four Aoudads
were 5 yards away, watching the buck.
The buck left and the Aoudads
circled out and go in the shooting window and stopped in bow range. Roy
drew on the biggest Aoudad and Clint whisper for him to let it take two
more steps because the Aoudad's rib area was behind the strap in the blind's
window (looking through the video camera's viewfinder). At the same time
the buck appeared again and the Aoudad turned to leave.
Roy did what Roy does best
and put his arrow behind the shoulder, a pass through shot.
The Aoudad ran and then went
down 60 yards away at the edge of a steep rocky cliff. Roy had just taken
Roy Keefer from Las Vegas,
Nevada with his Aoudad.
