June 25 & 26 - Planting The Food Plot

When I arrived home after the hog hunt at Billy Don's my wife Debbie told me that our neighbor Dale had shredded the area for my food plot. That was for sure good news.

Monday morning Dale returned and plowed the food plot.

He left and returned with a tine harrell. First he broadcasted the seed with a hand held broadcaster gizmo. Then he dragged the tine harrell over the food plot to spread dirt over the seeds.

In short order the food plot area was properly seeded and ready for a little rain. That's about 50% of the food plot area below. This is a small plot, which has worked very well for me in the past.

The plowing is fidished and the plot is ready for some rain.
The food plot seed is called Deer Weed and it can be planted from spring to early fall. It's an annual with a long taproot and wide-ranging lateral root system. I planted Winter Deer Weed a couple of years back and it was hammered by deer. I've never planted anything that came close to the strong drawing power of the Deer Weed food plot. (

We have had a lot of rain this spring and I am optimistic that I'll have a bang up food plot soon.

Two hours after planting we had a hard rain for half an hour and it drizzled into the afternoon. At 6:34pm this doe approached the plowed area. It was nervous and walked along the edge.

A spike in velvet visited the plot at 6:57pm and went out into the plowed area and ate stuff in the tilled earth.

Tuesday morning a doe came into the plowed area and browsed.

Twenty minutes later a buck in velvet came to the plowed area. As I turned my camera on and adjusted settings for the diminishing daylight two does came into the plowed area. The buck trotted in their direction and the two does ran back toward the woods they came from.

This afternoon our area had flash flooding from hard rains and thunder storms. The weather report says rain is likely all the way to Thursday morning.

Yea, like I said earlier, I definitely am optimistic that my food plot is gonna do good during the deer scouting time of July, August and September. I'll keep you posted.
